Introduction / History

The So Soko, also known simply as Soko or So, are a small Bantu-speaking people living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, primarily north of Basoko in the Orientale region. They are part of the broader Bantu, Central-Congo people cluster historically rooted in migrations across Central Africa that brought agriculture, village life, and deep community ties to the region. Their primary language is called So.

What Are Their Lives Like?

So Soko families center on farming, hunting, and local trading. Daily life revolves around tending crops such as cassava, plantains, and vegetables, raising children, and preparing communal meals with staples like fufu and grilled fish. Extended families live close together, elders are respected decision makers, and celebrations include weddings and harvest gatherings where music and dance mark joy and unity. Work, laughter, storytelling, and shared meals knit together everyday life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Their are few evangelicals, but most So Soko identify with Christianity, especially Catholic traditions brought by missionaries, yet elements of local spirit beliefs and reverence for ancestors often blend with formal worship. Baptism, church attendance, and prayer are woven into community rhythms, while many remember the creator and unseen spirits in daily life.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to clear Gospel teaching in their heart language is limited and many long for truth that brings transformation and hope. Communities desire schools, health care, and discipleship that equips believers to live out Christ's love in work and family. Prayer and faithful partners are vital for lasting change.

Prayer Items

Pray that So Soko believers will deepen in Christ and become effective witnesses to those who lack an adequate gospel witness.
Pray for the multiplication of disciple-makers, local church leadership, and gospel movements that address spiritual and physical needs.
Pray for wisdom, unity, and provision for families as they face challenges and opportunities for growth.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the scriptures, discipleship materials, and evangelism resources in the So language.
